Here’s why you need both to live your best!
“A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself and especially, to feel… letting a person be who they really are.”
adapted from Jim Morrison
Today may be a special day for some, but I truly believe Independence is misunderstood. It’s different for everyone but the dictionary says it’s NOT dependent, subject, bound, required, affiliated to…you get the picture. Freedom is my fav synonym, at least it’s NOT negative!
I challenge you to reframe this idea and explore how Freedom and Interdependence are both needed to increase your health, happiness and even make the world a better place! They may seem like opposing ideas, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on this especially this week when most celebrate an excuse to shop the sales or start up the grill (guilty)! I also invite you to engage with some of these concepts throughout July as we dive deeper in the following weeks.
Here’s a bit of both worlds of Freedom and Interdependence with one action you can begin with today to increase your health and wellbeing.
“Our greatest happiness does not depend on the condition of life in which chance has placed us, but is always the result of a good conscience, good health, occupation, and freedom in all just pursuits.” Thomas Jefferson
Freedom can be a complex subject. I simply frame it as freedom to choose. It first must start with a belief system that all is possible. For example, my father believes pain & suffering is part of ageing. Guess what he experiences?
Over 25 years of personal development, design to social entrepreneurship, coaching, connecting and creating, has been teaching me that everything starts with a belief in ourselves and a growth mindset.
Believe that we have a choice with every thought and deliberate creation (action not reaction)! This is true Freedom. Freedom gives you a sense of wellbeing and happiness! Start with creating a vision statement for your life one year from now. What does your life look like, how does it feel, taste and sound like?
Interdependence shows up best in Nature as it creates the best conditions to thrive on many levels. Like our own body, it’s a delicate balance and interdependence between the systems within our bodies, as well as with our mind, body, spirit, lifestyle and especially our relationship with nature. Listen more to what your body and nature are saying! All systems depend on each other for survival and it doesn’t rely on drugs!
“Nature itself is the best physician” Hippocrates
As a part of Nature (not apart from it), we are not meant to be in isolation, not separate from others or from our relationships or our community. Nature is simply the best model for us to start with to understand how to be our best. Popularly known as symbiosis, this sometimes complex interaction between two different organisms living in a close physical association is to the advantage of both, is the best analogy to our interdependence with nature whether we know it or not.
Although we have lost contact with nature and even our own intrinsic nature, nature has the incredible ability to course correct itself. Try this one action to course correct and feel the benefits immediately!
Get outside! It’s that simple but spends quality time among trees and plant life. If you’re lucky, getting sunlight in your eyes early in the day. Don’t count steps, make to-do lists in your head or touch your phone! In fact, do nothing but sit in the middle of the trees. Breathe deeply and take off your shoes (if you dare) will help even more! The Japanese call this forest bathing or Shinrin-yoku 森林浴. Read the links if you don’t believe me but give a go and let me know how you feel!
“The art of forest bathing is the art of connecting with nature through our senses. All we have to do is accept the invitation.” Dr Qing Li
