“Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.”-Charles R. Swindoll
I first heard this concept only recently through my coaches and mentors but understood this from years of my own personal development. It’s not exactly a conventional approach to a Christmas message but then again, we’re all different. Not everyone experiences joy, happiness and holiday cheer during this time of year but allow me to turn this into a positive message in three steps.
First step. Believe that the universe is a friendly and a ‘kind’ universe meaning that the world is NOT against you. Not an easy thing if you struggle with anxiety, stress and unhappiness during the holidays. Can I share part of my own story to help understand this?
“Sharing our stories opens up our hearts for other people to share their stories giving us the sense that we are not alone on this journey.” adapted from Janine Shepherd
You don’t have to be a genius to understand this although the concept of a ‘friendly universe’ comes from Albert Einstein. Essentially, it frames our perspective of the universe. So here goes. Today marks a day when our house in London sold. It has taken over a year to sell while living out of the country, three buyers, thousands of extra pounds, many sleepless nights (and I’m a sleep coach!) stress, on and on and on. In an unfriendly universe, I can easily blame many other people for their incompetence, taking advantage of me being out of the country, many delays and lack of communication and understanding. It would be ‘normal’ for me to feel that way. I would not be alone.
“You write your life story by the choices you make.”
Second step. Believe you have choices about how you think, act and behave. There are an infinite amount of choices every single day, some very difficult and life-changing. If I choose to be filled with anger, resentment and negativity for the things that ‘happened to me’, I could certainly carry this with me into the future. I could never trust estate agents, solicitors (lawyers in American) and I may never believe in investing in property or buy another house. It’s really hard to see but you do in fact have a choice. Taking 100% responsibility for your own life and each decision will start a process, an upward spiral of more of the things you want.
Third step. Step into a version of yourself that sees things differently. Imagine other options, possibilities then go deeper into your thoughts by taking time to be still and quiet your mind. Some people meditate, walk, take conscious, mindful deeper breaths whatever it takes to get there. For me, I’ve had to practice ALL of those things over the past weeks (it doesn’t always happen immediately) to find peace and the positive intention with my experience. We’re human. My message, the positive intention was to really look after my financial health as much as my physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health. We’ll get into this in more detail in the future because everything is connected. How we do one thing is how we do everything.
