What is your Vision for 2019?

“In order to carry a positive action, we must develop here a positive vision.”   Dalai Lama

The New Year and Winter is always a great opportunity to begin setting goals, resolutions and our vision. Let me be clear, it’s important to understand the difference because many people and even organizations get this wrong and quickly lose enthusiasm and momentum.

Allow me to share what I’ve learned from my coaches and mentors and in the next blog, I’ll share more on values and intentions and how it’s all connected.

The reason I include Winter in this piece is because we often have forgotten that we are a part of nature, not apart from it and if we actually can tap into the rhythm and power of nature, we can easily see that Winter is the time of quiet reflection, restoration and creation of our vision for the year ahead.

It’s the perfect time to sleep (and dream) a bit more, it’s natural to hibernate. We are driven my man’s calendar and many feel that we need to start the year on the ground running full speed, going on detox and beginning unrealistic fitness goals. Why do many fall off these ‘resolutions’ by the end of the month?

“Dreams are the seeds of our future vision, our ideas about who we are becoming and what we want in life. ”  Mag Secretario

Let’s start with your vision because it’s the big picture of what we want in life. My favourite definition of vision comes from the Anglo-French, “something seen in the imagination or in the supernatural.” It is limitless, long term and doesn’t require any action like a goal does. For example, my vision is to help people live their fullest potential and discover their path to fulfil that.

Goals, on the other hand, are necessary to realize your vision. Your vision will stretch our imagination, your goals will stretch you and are continuous tests of your abilities, skills and especially your perseverance. Goals can be checked off a list and are short term. An example of one of my goals following my vision is to create and lead our first retreat this year. More later on that!

The definition of resolution means to be determined, to be firm and resolute about something. According to U.S. News & World Report, 80 per cent of New Year’s resolutions fail by February.  I truly believe this is because most of us aren’t clear about what our true vision is and the difference between the words that are commonly used interchangeably.

Once we are crystal clear of WHO we are and WHY we are here, WHAT our vision is becomes aligned with our values and intentions and the HOW, the goals, systems and processes show up. Not the other way around!
